The Tempest

Audition Information

Thank you for your interest in auditioning for Vermont Repertory Theatre’s production of The Tempest! We are seeking new and experienced actors alike to dive into this fantastical story. One of our goals at Vermont Rep is to place an emphasis on understanding Shakespeare’s text. It is only through that understanding that the story and emotion of these wonderfully human characters can come through. If this sounds exciting, read on!

Email admin@vermontrep.com to book an audition slot. Send us your preferred time and date and we will respond with confirmation. Please list all of your known conflicts in this email as well. If you have a headshot and resume, please submit them. If you are unable to attend in person, please reach out to us to set up a video submission.

- A NOTE ON SCHEDULING AND COMMITMENT -

Some roles in this show will require a larger time commitment than others. Please let us know if you are interested in a smaller or larger commitment Rehearsals will be 3-4 nights a week, though very few, if any, actors will be called every night. As the show dates get closer, more time and energy will be required from the cast.

Below are the character descriptions and suggested monologues for each character. If none of these options speak to you, you may bring in something else to audition with. This monologue should be from a Shakespeare play and no longer than 12 lines. It is strongly encouraged that all monologues are memorized.

Character Descriptions

A NOTE ON GENDER

Please audition for whatever role speaks to you the most! The pronouns used in these descriptions are pulled from the text. The presentation of the characters may reflect these pronouns but the actors playing them do not need to.

PROSPERO

Full of power and status, and the leader of the island. Parent of Miranda, he is a man at a crossroads. (40-60)

MIRANDA

Daughter of Prospero, innocent and full of wonder - longs to see life beyond the island. (18-25)

ARIEL

Changeable and flighty spirit of air. Prospero’s servant. Non gender-specific. Physical performer, movement or dance training a plus. (ageless) - Those auditioning for Ariel will be asked to sing a simple song.

CALIBAN

Prospero’s captive, a half demon monster. Manipulative, willing to say, do or be anything to get what he wants. (25 - 35)

FERDINAND

Heir to the King of Naples. Hopeless, melancholic romantic, suitor to Miranda. (M) (18-25)

TRINCULO / STEFANO

A comedy double-act. Could be clowns, could be fools… are definitely drunks. (M/F) (20-60)

Trinculo - King Alonso’s Jester, the wittier of the two.

Stefano - King Alonso’s footman, the drunker of the two. The classic buffoon.

MILAN NOBLES

Alonso - King of Naples, proud and regal. Mourning the supposed death of his son, Ferdinand.

Sebastian - Prince of Naples and Alonso’s younger brother. Cautious to the point of being slow.

Antonio - Duke of Milan. Ambitious, sly, charming, and arrogant to a fault.

Gonzalo - Loyal right hand man of Alonso. Looks on the brighter side, perhaps to the point of annoyance.
